Open Windows always needs books in Spanish, educational videos, and materials for our craft activities, such as: paints, coloring pens, fabric for sewing, construction paper, etc.

To make it easy to give exactly is needed, we have developed a Wish List at Amazon.com. The library will also receive financial support from Amazon.com IF you click Amazon’s Special Link for Open Windows before shopping on Amazon’s website for ANYTHING! Yes that means any purchase you make at Amazon after clicking this link will help Open Windows.

To find the Open Windows Wish List once you are at Amazon’s website:
1) Click the button that says “Find Gifts” next to the top search box. A pop up box will appear and you should select “Wish List”.
2) On the next page, look for the box that says “Find Someone’s Wish List”. Type in “Open Windows”.

Open Windows also needs the following items described below but these items are actually much easier for us to purchase in Guatemala. We would greatly appreciate donations of funds to purchase the following items:

For the Outdoor Activities Area which is used for art projects, Open Windows needs:
8 plastic tables and 60 plastic chairs

For the New Computer Lab Open Windows needs:
- 2-3 tables for the center of the room, for group work

For the new Teen Reference Room & Study Area Open Windows needs:
2 additional wood tables and 12 chairs
4 industrial shelving units for books

Additional Needs:
The Library desperately needs a new business strength color copy machine/printer.

If you wish to send other material donations to Open Windows, please mail them to the following address. (Before sending, please email us at so that we will know to expect it.)

Volunteer with Open Windows

  • Do you enjoy being with children?
  • Do you like to teach children?
  • Do you want to help Guatemalan children?
  • Do you speak at least intermediate Spanish?
  • Do you want to learn more about life in Guatemala?

If you answer yes to ALL of the above, then OPEN WINDOWS is the place for you.

At Open Windows we have a variety of volunteer opportunities. A basic level of Spanish is required and we can design volunteer activities based on your interests. For example, you can help listen to children reading out loud, assist in common areas of difficulty like math homework, or coordinate and run creative educational workshops. Perhaps you are an artist, scientist or dancer and would like to create your own workshop with the children.

We can arrange for short or long-term volunteers. Many visitors to Guatemala are taking Spanish classes in nearby Antigua (20 minutes away) and are looking for afternoon volunteer work. Open Windows is an ideal place for Spanish students to practice their Spanish and learn more about Guatemalan culture and daily life in a typical Guatemalan town.

If you are interested, please take a look at the Volunteer Fact Sheet at the bottom of this page and, email us with your questions and ideas:

Become a Sister Library or Sister School

Are you involved with a children’s library or school that is looking to set up an exchange and support program with children in Guatemala? Open Windows is looking to create links with sister Libraries and sister schools around the world. This is a wonderful educational opportunity for children to learn about different countries and cultures, and discover what life is like in other parts of the world.

It is also a great way for children to learn that not all kids have the same opportunities and advantages in life that they do. With this exchange and support program children can get involved with fundraising and understanding what a difference just a few dollars can make to a child whose parents cannot even afford to buy their child a pair of shoes.
